M3GAN continues this trend while managing the impressive feat of succeeding as a horror release in January. As if to underline exactly this, producer Jason Blum celebrated M3GAN's opening weekend success with a tweet that specifically thanked theater attendees under 25.ΔΆ022 recently gave viewers a lot of successful horror movies whose relatively small budgets didn't stop them from earning excellent box office returns, such as the Barbarian mentioned above, Smile, Scream 2022, and the viral success Terrifier 2. ![]() Of course, M3GAN's PG-13 rating might not have worked for everyone, but it is clear from the opening weekend success of the movie that the Blumhouse project picked the correct age rating. However, the numbers don't lie, and M3GAN's formidable box office suggests that aiming for a PG-13 audience worked, especially since the movie proved so popular on social media platforms (which indicates that M3GAN skewed younger audience-wise). Since the majority of TikTok users are aged between 10 and 25, the viral marketing of M3GAN would have been a wasted investment if the finished movie had been burdened with an adult-only rating. Additionally, unlike many recent successful slasher robots, M3GAN is rated PG-13, which means that the movie could be viewed by the teen demographic that its viral TikTok marketing targeted. ![]() Since M3GAN made its villain less threatening and more comical (like Chucky in the later Child's Play sequels), the movie was free to take on a more inclusive age rating with less gore, terror, and bloody violence.
